What is the latest for Brisbane? We’ve got our finger on the pulse.
Plans for a $287.5m RNA showgrounds revamp have been unveiled as part of the infrastructure masterplan for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane.
The upgrade, to be delivered by the Queensland Government in partnership with the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA), will transform the Bowen Hills precinct.
It won’t host events, but the showgrounds will form part of the new Brisbane Athletes Village for the Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games, but following the Games, the showgrounds will be revitalised.
An upgrade of the 20,000-seat Main Arena is one of the major plans for the Showgrounds transformation, including a new Machinery Hill grandstand and horse pavilion as well as significant accessibility improvements.
The A$287.5m revamp follows last year’s works which have already been undertaken, including restoration works on two heritage-listed grandstands and planning and design for the Main Arena upgrade.
Work will start following this year’s Ekka, which will take place from August 8 to August 16.
The Ekka will continue to be held at the RNA Showgrounds while construction is underway and the only year the event won’t be held will be in 2032, when the Games take place.
